Navigating Hong Kong’s Trade Digitalization: Three Essential KPIs

E-commerce sales in Hong Kong currently represent only 8% of total retail sales, significantly lower than in markets like mainland China, the UK, and South Korea. This suggests substantial growth potential for e-commerce and digital trade in the region. The city should seize future trade trends and focus on digitizing trade by achieving three KPIs: the realization of paperless trade, the development of cross-border e-commerce, and the advancement of digital services trade.

Despite its wide support, ESG investing faces criticism, particularly in the United States, where some state governments and the energy sector express concerns about its potential negative impact on the economy and business competitiveness.

Examining the Key Factors Driving the Mainland Economy Behind the Stock Market Frenzy

Recently, the People's Bank of China introduced a series of quantitative easing measures, including lowering the reserve requirement ratio and implementing swap facilities to support the stock market. These actions aim to address challenges in economic growth, prevent deflation, and inject liquidity to stimulate the stock market, countering investors' pessimism. However, despite strong stock market performance, the real economy faces challenges, with industrial profits dropping nearly 17% and consumer confidence declining steadily.

Worrying Fiscal Predicament Looms Large for the US

Over the past 5 years, the US government's fiscal deficit has persistently exceeded $1 trillion, positioning the country among global leaders in debt levels. Economists and international institutions are concerned that the government's fiscal deficit has consistently exceeded 3% of GDP. Currently, US public debt stands close to 100% of GDP, projected to rise to 116% by 2034, posing a significant burden on the country's long-term economic development.

CPI or EPI, or Both?

Household spending is a key factor in personal and family financial planning, as well as policymaking to improve people's livelihoods. While the government's Consumer Price Index (CPI) is a mainstream indicator, it often fails to accurately reflect the daily living costs of the public. CPI has limitations, such as over-emphasising non-essential goods and services (e.g. Rental expenses and furniture), and people's subjective inflation perceptions tend to be higher than the actual data.

While Africa is gaining a voice globally, with the African Union joining the G20, its economic progress lags behind. Africa's per capita income declined from 30% of the global average in 1990 to only 21% in 2023, with low participation in international trade beyond exporting raw materials.
