HKU BGLIS’s First Cohort Takes 34% of the Martin Prize Winners at St John’s College

The inaugural cohort of BGLIS (Bachelor of Global Leadership, Innovation and Society) at HKU Business School accounts for 34% of this year’s Martin Prize recipients at St John’s College — 10 of the 29 total recipients.

The Martin Prize is awarded by St John’s College in recognition of excellent academic performance. It is open to first-year students, both undergraduates and postgraduates. This year, 29 students received the award.

St John’s College is administratively independent of the University and sets its own admission policy. Applicants complete the College’s application form; shortlisted candidates are interviewed. Selection is merit-based: a candidate’s potential and the values they share with the College weigh alongside prior attainment.

Recipients describe the achievement as collective as much as individual. St John’s is a close-knit community, and BGLIS, one of its newest, has taken on the same habits: students follow one another’s progress, and count the cohort’s results as shared. For BGLIS, growing as a community means making sure that no one grows alone.

“It was touching to see how strongly everyone in the College supported one another,” one recipient said. “When students from different floors went up to receive their awards, you could hear their floor brothers and sisters cheering so loudly for them. It made me feel that everyone was genuinely proud of the achievements of our peers in the College.”

“We rise by lifting others.” — A BGLIS Martin Prize recipient.
