The Next China Is Still China: Joe Ngai Shares Insights with HKU Business School Community
HKU Business School was honoured to welcome Mr. Joe Ngai, Greater China Chairman of McKinsey & Company, for an inspiring book sharing session on the theme of “Next China.” The event brought together more than 110 alumni and students for an evening of insightful discussion, reflection, and engaging exchange.
Professor Hongbin Cai, Dean of HKU Business School, delivered the welcoming remarks and set the stage for a timely conversation on China’s evolving business landscape and the opportunities emerging in the new era.
Drawing on insights from his book, The Next China Is Still China: An Insider’s Playbook for Winning in the New Era, Mr. Ngai shared his perspectives on China’s ongoing transformation. While the country is facing slower growth, demographic changes, and intensifying competition, he highlighted that China’s scale, resilience, and capacity for innovation remain remarkable. One of the key themes of the evening was “involution,” which Mr. Ngai described as an important lens through which to understand today’s China. Referring to China as the “toughest gym in the world,” he explained how companies operating in the market are constantly pushed to move faster, execute more effectively, remain lean, and innovate continuously. Looking ahead, Mr. Ngai noted that while the previous chapter of China’s rise was defined by grit and ambition, the next phase will increasingly be shaped by skill and technology.
The sharing session was followed by an engaging fireside chat moderated by Professor Heiwai Tang, Associate Dean of HKU Business School. The discussion explored how companies can compete and thrive in China, how multinational corporations are adapting to the changing market environment, and how Chinese enterprises are expanding globally and reshaping industries.
HKU Business School would like to express its sincere gratitude to Mr. Albert Yu, EMBA – International Stream student, Chairman of Global Growth Alliance, and member of the Board of Governors of the HKU Business School Alumni Association, for his generous support in making this meaningful exchange possible.
The School also extends its appreciation to all alumni, students, and guests who joined the event. HKU Business School looks forward to continuing to provide platforms for thought-provoking conversations that connect, inspire, and energise its community.
