INTRODUCTION
This talk in the Inception of Ideas seminar will describe the evolution of the work presented in this 1987 JRSSB paper with D. R. Cox. In particular I will emphasize the role of some asymptotic theory that was being developed at the time by Barndorff-Nielsen and others. I will also try to assess the work’s potential relevance for inference with the very complex models commonly used today.
