Abstract:
I develop a decision-theoretic model of motivated attention wherein an agent resolves intrapersonal conflict by seeking out information that helps justify tempting choices. The framework is a decision-theoretic analogue of Bayesian Persuasion and the results, utilizing various observable primitives, establish basic identification and comparative static results for that model. The analysis also provides insights into the interaction between temptation, attention, demand for commitment, and the value of information that differ substantially from related decision models.
