HKU Business School is proud to celebrate the successful conclusion of the 17th cohort of its Business Consulting Practicum (BCP) 2025–26. This summer, BCP brought together 25 student consultants, five client organisations from a range of industries and five professional mentors. Following intensive training, students embarked on a four-week, full-time consulting engagement, stepping beyond the classroom to address genuine organisational challenges. Working closely with their clients, they developed tailored, innovative and evidence-based recommendations while gaining first-hand experience of the demands—and rewards—of professional consulting.

More than an experiential learning course, BCP embodies HKU Business School’s commitment to combining rigorous business education with social responsibility. By connecting talented students with organisations in the local community, the programme creates meaningful opportunities for young people to apply their knowledge, contribute fresh thinking and deliver practical solutions.

This mission extends throughout students’ four years at HKU Business School: to equip them not only with business expertise, but also with the values, judgement and sense of purpose needed to create a positive societal impact and become responsible leaders.

Equipping Students to Tackle Real-World Challenges

Before beginning their client engagements, the student consultants completed intensive practical training in core consulting skills, social media, digital marketing and e-commerce, market research, and financial management. This multidisciplinary preparation equipped them to diagnose business issues, frame strategic questions, evaluate evidence and translate their findings into clear, actionable recommendations.

On May 30, the Opening Ceremony cum Tripartite Meeting was held, serving as the official kick-off of the entire Practicum and the first official meeting between our Student Consultants, Business Clients, and Professional Mentors to network and deep-dive into their respective consultancy projects.

Moving on in the practicum, students received ongoing guidance and constructive feedback from client representatives, the Course Coordinator and professional mentors, helping them refine both their thinking and professional approach. The result was a vigorous and immersive learning experience that challenged students to think critically, communicate persuasively and respond confidently to the complexities of real-world business.

Turning Fresh Ideas into Meaningful Impact

On 27 June, following four weeks of intensive work, the practicum culminated in final presentations to the client organisations. Each team presented its analysis, strategic insights and practical recommendations, demonstrating not only technical competence but also the confidence, professionalism and resilience developed throughout the programme.

For the participating organisations, BCP provided access to energetic young talent, fresh perspectives and evidence-based ideas tailored to their needs. For students, it offered an invaluable opportunity to learn through service, contribute to tangible outcomes and deepen their understanding of the broader implications of business decisions.

The experience also accelerated students’ professional and personal development. Alongside sharpening their business knowledge, they strengthened essential capabilities in teamwork, leadership, problem-solving, adaptability, project management and stakeholder communication. In the process, they became more well-rounded individuals with a deeper appreciation of how responsible business practice can serve society.

At the Closing Ceremony on 11 July 2026, the BCP cohort celebrated the teams’ achievements and reflected on their remarkable growth. The occasion recognised not only the quality of the solutions they delivered, but also the determination, maturity and collaborative spirit they displayed throughout their journey.

“As social workers, finance was never our area of expertise. We had long hoped for support in addressing our financial challenges. The BCP participants’ dedication and insights have been invaluable to our organisation.”

Ms. Wendy Ng, Deputy Executive Director,
Centre for Restoration of Human Relationships Ltd

“I am grateful to BCP for the opportunity to return to campus and support student learning. It was especially fulfilling to walk alongside with the team throughout the project and witness their growth, and I am proud to have been part of the team.”

Mr. Fergus Wong, BCP Summer 2025-26 Professional Mentor

“Joining BCP as a freshman gave me valuable exposure to the business world. It allowed me to apply classroom knowledge to solve real client challenges, and I am truly thankful for this rewarding experience.”

Testing AI in the Real World – HKU Business School Released AI Agents’ Trading Performance
Over the past year, AI large language models (LLMs) have rapidly evolved from simply generating text to taking independent actions and using complex tools. However, a key question remains: can these AI agents actually make profitable decisions in real-world, unpredictable environments? To test this, the Artificial Intelligence Evaluation Lab (AIEL) at HKU Business School, led by Professor Jack Jiang, launched Agentic Trader, through which they evaluated the autonomous trading capabilities of LLM agents in live foreign exchange markets.
