The session commenced with warm greetings by Prof. Winnie Leung, the Assistant Dean (Undergraduate), who described the visit as a symbol of the strong bond of collaboration and mutual respect between our esteemed institutions. This was followed by a brief lecture conducted by Prof. Zhiwu Chen, the director of both the Hong Kong Institute for Humanities and Social Sciences (HKIHSS) and the Centre for Quantitative History (CQH) at the University of Hong Kong. Prof. Chen provided a comprehensive historical overview of Hong Kong, tracing its evolution from prehistoric times to British rule and the “One Country, Two Systems” model. He also explored the impact of warfare and maritime trade on the development of North and South China, shedding light on the cultural dynamics and challenges faced by Hong Kong. The participants engaged in a lively discussion with interactive dialogue and questions based on Prof. Chen’s presentation.
