International MBS Business Management Simulation Competition 2023

Background:

The International MBS Business Management Simulation Competition 2023 is an annual event that aims to provide a platform for students from various business schools across the Asia-Pacific region to apply their knowledge and skills in a simulated business management environment. The competition involved a series of challenges that simulated real-world business scenarios and required students to make strategic decisions related to marketing, finance, operations, and other business functions by providing students with practical exercises in Data Analysis and AI Decision Support Systems (DSS) through Business Intelligence (BI).

This year, the competition brought together over 150 Hong Kong students and 100 overseas students from 9 countries and 50+ universities from all over the world. The competition consisted of five rounds of intense business management simulation games, where the top 8 teams that achieved the highest scores through 4 rounds of the simulation game were given the opportunity to present their business strategy to the panel of judges in the grand final.

Students Sharing:

“From boot camps to practice workshops offered by IABMS (the “organizer”), it was a great opportunity to acquire and develop technical skills from hands-on field experience from scratch, like learning to extract key insights from large data inputs and interpret economic indicators. It is fascinating to represent different departments within the group to analyze and debate different business issues, including production flow, inventory management, R&D, and how to finance each project quantitatively. The result of our department’s work and active discussion enables us to make a clear presentation with closely linked ideas. Overall, the competition provided a comprehensive yet concise overview of various business departments, which broadened my business horizons and enhanced my technical knowledge and soft skills.”

(By POON Tsz Chung)

“Through this competition, I learnt about the basic operations and decision-making processes of companies’ finance and marketing, which helped sharpen my business acumen. It involved analyzing various business data to determine appropriate production allocations, marketing strategies, and R&D expenses in order to thrive in the dynamic business marketplace. This experience improved my analytical skills and allowed me to apply my accounting knowledge in practice.”

(By LIAN Wai Kai)

“Participating in the competition, I learnt more about companies’ operations in different aspects from the macro-business simulation. After we entered decisions on various markets and long-term investments, it was interesting to find out the rationale behind the user interface by analyzing both our team’s conditions and other competitors’ decisions. This experience has provided me valuable insight on actual business operations in the real world.”

(By WONG Man Chun)

“I would like to quote a statement the team has made during the strategy pitching portion of the competition: although the strategy has been broken down into 3 parts, we believe that it is the collective efforts and continuous communication that allowed the team to make optimal decisions.

As a member of team NPV (of Year 1 students), I definitely did not expect to ultimately win the competition, but instead just to have fun and make the best attempt possible as a team. I recall the team talking about the not-so-good performance in the training workshops by IABMS (the “organizer”), but still, we tried to take notes and apply the learnings from school, from the online simulation, and most importantly, from the team members ourselves.

As my teammates have mentioned, during the competition, we analyzed quantitatively the given scenario and tried our best to hypothesize what would be the optimal decision for us. No one really knew what the correct answer or decision was—there’s no such thing as 100% certainty in forecasting or predictions. Nevertheless, I would like to mention once again, it is the great team spirit that each member has contributed that has guided the team to success. I believe that all of us are delighted to have won, and surprised that we were able to incorporate our learnings into reality with this simulation experience.”

(By WANG Issam Sam)

“Participating in the International MBS Business Management Simulation Competition 2023 is an eye-opening and rewarding experience for all of us. It was challenging as it required us to analyze market trends and make concrete business decisions. We spent a lot of time and effort to understand the business stimulation platform and drafted various Excel models from scratch to support our decisions. However, we managed to pull through in the end and refine the model after trials and errors. Throughout the competition, we were able to reinforce how important teamwork is. We also seized the opportunity to learn from the judges and other teams from all over the world.

All in all, we are grateful for the opportunity to participate and look forward to applying our newfound knowledge in the future.”

CGMA Global Business Challenge 2023 – North Asia Final

Background:

The CGMA Global Business Challenge 2023 is an international business competition held by the Association of International Certified Professional Accountants (AICPA) and the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA) to nurture young business leaders.

The Challenge provided an excellent platform for students to showcase their potential while gaining practical experience in a real-world setting, as well as the opportunity to learn from industry experts, network with like-minded individuals, and demonstrate their skills and knowledge in a highly competitive global environment.

In the Hong Kong semi-finals, students were required to apply various business knowledge and skills to solve simulated business cases by developing a comprehensive expansion plan for a hotel into a new country with report writing and presentation. In the North Asia finals, students were tasked with guiding the hotel’s transition from offline to online with a two-page executive summary and a presentation.

These cases provided students with an opportunity to apply their classroom knowledge to real-world business situations.

“Participating in the CGMA Global Business Challenge 2023 was a transformative experience for me, both in terms of personal growth and team building.

Collaborating with my teammates, leveraging each other’s strengths, and effectively delegating tasks were essential to our success in winning both the Hong Kong semi-finals and the North Asia finals. Through this, I gained a deeper understanding of the importance of teamwork, forging genuine connections with colleagues, and exhibiting effective leadership.

Our team’s frequent interactions with our mentor and feedback from the judges were instrumental in our rapid improvement over just two weeks. As freshmen with limited knowledge and experience, receiving guidance from experts helped us push ourselves to achieve our best. I learned the value of exceptional mentorship and guidance, especially at the early stages of one’s career.

Winning the Best Presenter award in the Hong Kong semi-finals and the Future Business Leader award in the North Asia finals were defining moments for me. Being recognized by esteemed judges among the brightest minds in North Asian universities was a tremendous honor. These awards helped me overcome my stage fright and lack of confidence, providing the motivation to study harder, work harder, and strive to be the best version of myself. It was a reminder that there are people who believe in me and my potential.”

“Participating in the CGMA Global Business Challenge 2023 has been an eye-opening experience for me. It has provided me with the opportunity to connect with like-minded individuals from different parts of the world and work collaboratively on complex business problems. Through this experience, I have learned to approach problems with a more open mind, to consider different perspectives, and to communicate effectively with a diverse group of people. The challenge has also helped me to develop my problem-solving skills as well as my ability to work under pressure and within tight deadlines. Overall, the Challenge has been a transformative experience that has helped me grow and build amazing friendships along the way.”

(By LEUNG Victoria Sze Pui)

“The CGMA Global Business Challenge 2023 was an eye-opening experience that gave me the opportunity to work with like-minded teammates to collaborate on challenging tasks that forced us to think outside the box and develop various skills such as presentation, time management, and critical thinking. The biggest challenge for me personally was the one-week time limit for the North Asia final to fully analyze and create a presentation deck for the case, as well as sufficiently prepare for any questions the judges would ask. Hence, being able to overcome these challenges and win this competition made this experience a highlight of my first year of university.”

(By CHIN Hoi Lam Michelle)

“Throughout the CGMA Global Business Challenge 2023, I have gained invaluable insights and forged lasting connections. Collaborating with my hardworking and talented teammates, I learned the power of effective teamwork and discovered our combined strengths could tackle complex business problems, which helped us stand out in the Hong Kong semi-final and North Asia final.

With high-level suggestions and feedback from our mentor and judges, our business analytical and strategic thinking skills were sharpened, while enhancing our ability to communicate arguments more persuasively and gaining opportunities to learn more business theories beyond textbooks.

This experience has also taught me valuable lessons about the importance of perseverance and resilience in the face of challenges.  Despite the obstacles I faced, such as not having a permanent residential place in Hong Kong, I had quickly made necessary changes, such as booking flight tickets from the city I live in (Shanghai) and hotels earlier to meet my teammates on time and conduct rehearsals.

The diverse perspectives of participants from various backgrounds in the Challenge provided enriching learning opportunities for me. This experience has bolstered my confidence and reinforced the importance of adaptability and resilience in today’s rapidly evolving business landscape. I am grateful for this transformative journey with my teammates and will carry this lesson throughout my career.”

Launched in 2019, the CIEC programme aims to provide the younger generation with an in-depth understanding of the economic development in Hong Kong and Mainland China, as well as the latest trend in business, economics, creativity, innovation and entrepreneurship in the Greater Bay Area.  In 2023, we are delighted to have brought together 52 students from different faculties at The University of Hong Kong and other top universities in Canada, Taiwan, United Kingdom and mainland China. Students from China, India, Indonesia, Netherlands, South Korea, Taiwan and U.S.A had actively participated in the CIEC regardless of their geographic location. The programme, taking an innovative pedagogical approach itself, was led by CIEC Programme Directors, Mr. Joseph Chan and Dr. Jing Li.

The programme also provided students with ample opportunities to discuss and present their innovative ideas on hot topics in technology applications, cultural innovation and digital transformation.

CIEC Programme Directors, Mr. Chan and Dr. Li, had conducted interviews with guest speakers from these companies before the programme began. After broadcasting the interview videos, students got the chance to interact with the industry experts in the Q&A sessions throughout the 9-day programme. These interactive sessions offered valuable opportunities for students, not only to understand the real business landscape and environment, development and policy of different industries but also to explore their own future development and planning. 15 speakers for the guest lectures included (in alphabetical order of industry partners):

Mr. Chan gave the greatest appreciation to our guests who took time out of their busy schedule for interactive conversation and answered our students’ questions from their heart. “Participating in the FOAHK sustainable portfolio management competition was an incredible experience for our team. We conducted extensive research on macro and investment outlooks and developed a tactical asset allocation for an ultra-high-net-worth individual, which pushed us to think critically about sustainability and social responsibility while meeting our client’s financial goals. We had to stay up-to-date on global market trends, analyze different asset classes, and constantly reassess our portfolio to ensure that it remained relevant and profitable. Through collaboration and sharing our expertise and insights, we created a well-rounded and successful portfolio. This competition challenged us to think innovatively and develop investment strategies that are both financially sustainable and socially responsible, providing us with a rewarding opportunity to expand our knowledge and skills in portfolio management and sustainability.”

“My team had the chance to join other finalists in the final round of FOAHK 2023 Case Competition in March 2023. Through the journey, our team got the chance to be mentored by senior practitioners in Family Office Industry. Although the 2 rounds of case-cracking were indeed challenging, the experience was incredibly humbling and interesting. We pulled it off with great teamwork and presented an all-in-one wealth management solution for a ultra-high-net-worth client. We had stepped out of our comfort zone to manage our time across multiple tasks and explore different services in Family Office, from investment counselling to impact investing and philanthropic solutions. Through formulating investment strategies and solutions, I understood the importance of being a part of the growing family office industry in Asia. Looking forward to more learning opportunities in the future!”

“Winning 2nd Runner-up in the FOAHK 2023 Case Competition was an incredibly rewarding experience for me. The competition challenged me to create an investment portfolio that balances the often competing interests of ESG considerations, client needs, macroeconomic environment, and philanthropic goals. As I worked on the portfolio, I found myself constantly pushing the boundaries of my knowledge and expertise. I had to consider not only the technical aspects of investment management but also the ethical and social dimensions that underlie ESG investing. The Q&A session was especially tough, but it was also a valuable learning experience. It forced me to defend my ideas and articulate my thought process, and it gave me a glimpse into the real-world challenges of investment management. Overall, winning 2ndRunner-up in the competition has inspired me to continue pursuing excellence in investment management. I’m grateful for the opportunity to have participated in the competition and for the lessons that I’ve learned along the way.”

(By Law Yun Laam, Ray)

“Having the chance to participate in the FOAHK2023 Case Competition was truly an amazing experience for me. It provided me with the chance to learn more about the asset management industry and also the daily operations and functions of a family office. On top of that, the competition prompted us to think deeply about incorporating ESG elements into investments, analyze market trends, and eventually construct a portfolio based on our client’s needs and profile. Winning the 2nd Runner-up in the competition has encouraged me to dive deeper into the world of investment, and I am excited to join more similar opportunities in the future.”

ESG Challenge 2023

Background:

The ESG Challenge was an annual case competition organized by the Hong Kong Federation of Business Students (HKFBS) which aims to raise awareness among university students about the importance of Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) in different industries. With the sponsorship from PwC, this year’s competition focused on sustainability in the Food & Beverage industry with the theme – “Road to Sustainability”. Teams of 3 to 5 students had to propose a long-term project to solve or alleviate an existing waste in a self-selected F&B company, focusing on Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) to assess the environmental impacts.

The competition involved three rounds – preliminary, semi-finals, and finals. In each round, teams had to submit a revised and lengthier proposal based on their initial idea, as well as complete a LCA for their proposal. For the final round, teams had to present their idea in front of a panel of judges and answer questions from them. The competition provided students with valuable opportunities to apply their knowledge and think critically about ESG concepts in real-world scenarios.

Students Sharing:

“The ESG Challenge was definitely one of the most stimulating case competitions I have ever joined, as it was not easy to think of a new and innovative ESG solution for established F&B chains. However, once we were able to settle on a solid idea, it has transited into a rewarding and inspiring journey of learning more about how the profits of a company are not just affected by their business activities, but also by their ESG actions. The case competition truly helped my teammates and I learn more about this upcoming business focus and trend.”

(By So Mei Chi Germaine)

“For the First Round, teams were required to submit a 5-page executive summary. 12 teams were selected to proceed into the Semi-Final, then 4 finalist teams pitched their proposals in the Grand Final. Our team devised a circular solution – “Tesco’s Environmentally Sustainable Cattle Operation (TESCO)” which upcycles Tesco’s food waste through insect farms into protein supplements for cattle in Tesco’s dairy farms. I am glad that our team performed well and won the Championship at last.

My parts were the LCA (life cycle assessment) and Financials sections, which were quite technical. I read many scientific papers while compiling and comparing information about pollutants emitted, energy use, and land use during the various alternative processes of producing protein supplements for cattle. Besides, it was my first attempt in doing financial analysis, such as projecting costs and conducting a cost-benefit analysis. It was a refreshing experience and a great learning opportunity, and I hope to collaborate with my teammates Germaine and Zoe again soon.”

(By Fung Sem Tou Sheryl)

“I have gained a better insight into what ESG is, and beyond that, I have learned how to apply ESG concepts in an actual business/real-life setting. Other than knowledge gains, I have strengthened all forms of soft skills, such as presentation, collaboration, and leadership skills.”
