Meet Our New Faculty Member – Associate Professor Wei Luo

Professor Wei Luo is Associate Professor of Teaching in Accounting and Law and Co-Director of the HKU Business School’s Shenzhen campus. He completed his doctoral degree in Accounting at the University of Pittsburgh in 2005 and then spent 20 years teaching Accounting at Peking University’s Guanghua School of Management, where he received two Teaching Excellence Awards and a Teaching Scholarship.

In 2001, as the Chinese Mainland’s economy accelerated after joining the World Trade Organization and its capital markets evolved, Prof. Luo began studying Chinese firms to focus on their unique governance challenges. His research has focused on how various stakeholders influence corporate governance, management incentives, and the quality of accounting information in Chinese firms.

Since 2012, he has served on the board of directors for seven A-Share companies and acted as Chairman of an Audit Committee.

As an educator with more than 20 years of experience, Prof. Luo has developed a teaching style that is inclusive and responsive to the different needs of his students. He sees himself more as a facilitator than a teacher, and he is committed to helping students develop continuous learning abilities and adaptability in our fast-changing global business environment.

He loves to inspire his students to question, analyse, and explore the trade-offs found in all decision-making, emphasising that there are no correct answers to business problems but only trade-offs and unforeseen consequences.

Prof. Luo’s greatest pleasure is to share his thinking with his students, to learn from their thinking around the same question, and to grow together with them.

His advice to students is that when they face tough challenges, they should seek help and talk to their teachers, since they are here for you.
