The sixth cohort of HKU Business School’s annual summer programme, “Creativity, Innovation and Entrepreneurship in China (CIEC)”, successfully concluded on June 24, 2026. Running from June 15 to 24, this nine-day virtual programme brought together a diverse group of students from The University of Hong Kong and international institutions. Students explored the dynamic forces of creativity, innovation, and entrepreneurship shaping China’s Greater Bay Area.

Since its launch in 2019, CIEC has established itself as a unique platform that bridges academic learning with real-world industry practice. Led by Programme Co-Directors Prof. Joseph Chan and Dr. Jing Li, this year’s edition featured a rich mix of insightful lectures, interactive case studies, cultural exploration activities, and engaging debate sessions. Students gained valuable perspectives on emerging trends, cross-border business challenges, and leadership in a rapidly evolving landscape.

A standout element of the programme was its strong connection with industry leaders. This year, students engaged with senior executives and founders from sectors including asset management, executive search, luxury yacht manufacturing, healthcare, live events, education, and cross-border professional services. Through interviews and interactive live Q&A sessions, students heard firsthand accounts of career journeys, industry transformations, and practical strategies for navigating the dynamic Chinese market and beyond.

Students also actively collaborated across cultures, debating key topics and analysing real business cases, which enriched their understanding and fostered innovative thinking. Included are 11 speakers for the guest lectures, listed alphabetically by industry partners (in alphabetical order of industry partners):

  • Angel Zhou, President of Benetti Asia, Benetti Yachts
  • Lora Yip, Managing Director, BlackRock
  • April Tsui, School Director, Clement Kindergarten and Nursery
  • Johnny Sze, CEO, Eastcolight (Hong Kong) Limited
  • Fiona Cai, Consultant, Egon Zehnder International Limited
  • Candy Chen, Head of DCM Department, Guolian Securities International
  • Ronald Chan, Chief Medical Officer, HC Medical
  • Juliana Lam, Founder & President, INNOTIER
  • Alan Lai, CEO, Pet Space Group Limited
  • Tonny Wong, Partner, WWC Professional Corporation Limited
  • Daniel Chang, CMO & Partner, Yiu Wing Live

At the closing session, the Programme Co-Directors reflected warmly on the cohort’s journey.

Dr. Jing Li shared: “Every year, our CIEC students surprise us with their energy, creativity, and strong learning ability. The ability to quickly adapt to new topics and keep learning is one of the most important skills in today’s world. I was touched when a student from our very first cohort reached out years later — it shows the lasting impact of this programme.”

Prof. Joseph Chan added: “Throughout this programme, we’ve had many discussions about AI and its impact. AI will not replace those who bring real industry insights and value. I encourage you all to maintain a big-picture vision and step forward boldly. Enjoy the rest of your summer and keep in touch with the CIEC community.”

The CIEC team extends its gratitude to all students, guest speakers, and supporting staff. Plans are underway to strengthen the growing international CIEC network through future in-person events and continued alumni engagement.

Testing AI in the Real World – HKU Business School Released AI Agents’ Trading Performance
Over the past year, AI large language models (LLMs) have rapidly evolved from simply generating text to taking independent actions and using complex tools. However, a key question remains: can these AI agents actually make profitable decisions in real-world, unpredictable environments? To test this, the Artificial Intelligence Evaluation Lab (AIEL) at HKU Business School, led by Professor Jack Jiang, launched Agentic Trader, through which they evaluated the autonomous trading capabilities of LLM agents in live foreign exchange markets.
