Standing proudly next to our 20^th anniversary milestone, HKU Business School shall accelerate its steadfast footsteps and strive to become the thought leader of the Hong Kong society. Earlier this year, we had gathered our academic intellect to publish the “Hong Kong Economic Policy Green Paper 2021” to inspire policy makers on strategising new ways of breakthrough; Later in May, we had organised the first of our Thought Leadership Conference Series — the “Future of Hong Kong Economy” Conference, to solicit insights from local business and political elites. In the second half of 2021, starting from July, we will join hands with The Hong Kong General Chamber of Commerce (HKGCC) to launch a series of webinars to consider some of the more pressing issues faced in Hong Kong. Forthcoming topics include the role and size of government, brain drain, social inequality and ageing population, and bolstering public finance.

To kick off the series, the first session to be hosted in July will look at the options available to Hong Kong in repositioning itself following the great reset caused by covid. How can we sustain our standing and reputation as an international financial centre and a business destination of choice? What more could the government do to strengthen Hong Kong’s economy and maintain its value proposition especially in the context of the Greater Bay Area? Should there be a rethink of our pillar industries and what should such a change and diversification look like?

Interested HKU students, staff and alumni, can join us on July 13, for a lively webinar chaired by Professor Heiwai Tang, Professor of Economics at HKU Business School and Dr. Michael Spencer, the Chief Economist of Deutsche Bank. They will share their thoughts on the way forward for Hong Kong if it were to remain relevant and competitive in a post-covid landscape. All sessions in the series will be moderated by Tony Miller, Chairman of the Chamber’s Economic Policy Committee.

Speakers’ bios

In addition to his capacity as Professor of Economics at HKU Business School, Professor Heiwai Tang is also Associate Director of the Asia Global Institute, the Institute for China and Global Development and the Hong Kong Institute of Economics and Business Strategy at the University of Hong Kong. His research interests span a wide range of topics in international trade, with a focus on production networks, global value chains and China.

Dr. Michael Spencer has been a senior member of Deutsche Bank’s research department since 1997, becoming Chief Economist for the region in 2000. As Head of Research, Asia Pacific, he oversees the bank’s equity, fixed income, foreign exchange and economics research throughout the region.
