Brief introduction: Hong Kong has been ranked the least affordable housing market in the world for more than a decade. Since the early 2010s, landlords and developers have rushed to meet an enormous demand for tiny units by creating coffin homes and subdivided units. What is the reason that so many poor households in Hong Kong have no choice but to reside in cramped and unsafe spaces? Why is Hong Kong’s housing market unlike any other in the world? What can be done to fix the situation? This talk will correct common misconceptions about Hong Kong’s housing market. The economics of the subdivided housing crisis will be explained. Some achievable and inexpensive reforms will be proposed to quickly alleviate the crisis.

An Engaging Alumni Event – The Insight Forum on Global Dynamics and Emerging Opportunities in 2024

The HKU Business School Alumni Association (HKUBSAA) recently hosted a successful event titled “The Insight Forum: Global Dynamics and Emerging Opportunities in 2024,” supported by the HKU Business School. Over 80 alumni and guests gathered for an insightful knowledge exchange session.

The event began with a keynote presentation by Prof. Yang LIU, Associate Professor at HKU Business School, who shared his expertise on international trade and investment trends shaping the 2024 global economy and the Hong Kong linked exchange rate system. The presentation shed light on various aspects such as China’s slower economic growth, geopolitical risks, foreign direct investment flows, and the advantages and challenges of the linked exchange rate system in Hong Kong.

Following the keynote presentation, a Fireside Chat focused on Investing Opportunities in the Middle East Market, featuring industry experts and alumni who discussed the potential investment opportunities and challenges in the rapidly growing Middle Eastern market.

HKU Business School is dedicated to maintaining a strong bond within the alumni community and fostering continuous learning and networking opportunities. Meet the author – Weijian Shan: Money Machine

We were honored to host the distinguished Dr. Weijian Shan for a captivating “Meet the Author” book talk last Friday evening. Dr. Shan discussed his latest book, “Money Machine – A Trailblazing American Venture in China”, which provides an intriguing insider’s perspective on one of the region’s most significant private equity deals. His other well-received previous books include “Out of Gobi: My Story of China and America” and “Money Games: The Inside Story of How American Dealmakers Saved Korea’s Most Iconic Bank”.

Dr. Shan, who transformed from a barefoot doctor in the Gobi during the Cultural Revolution to a world-leading private equity titan, delivered an enlightening presentation. He was also a former professor at Wharton School. The event featured a captivating fireside chat moderated by our Dean, Professor Hongbin Cai. It was particularly exciting to see the attendance of numerous Wharton alumni, who had the opportunity to connect with our own students and graduates. We eagerly await to hear what’s in store for Dr. Shan’s next chapter.

2023 marks the 60th anniversary of the iconic Italian super sports car brand, Automobili Lamborghini. In celebration of this milestone, we’re proud to share that our esteemed HKU Business School alumnus, Albert Wong (BBA 2003), Chief Executive Officer and Principal of Kingsway Cars—Lamborghini’s official dealer in Hong Kong and Guangzhou—is playing a significant role in hosting the “Lamborghini 852 Art Car Charity Exhibition” at their Wan Chai Star Street showroom from December 2-10.

All proceedings will be donated to the “Make-A-Wish Foundation” following the exhibition to help children with serious illnesses to realize wishes that are potentially life-changing, so as to fill their lives with hope, strength and happiness.

Our MBA graduate, Mr. Raymond Mak shared his creative and thrilling entrepreneurial journey in founding his innovative award-winning green startup, Farmacy HK. Farmacy is the latest winner of Hong Kong ICT Startup Awards (overall Grand Award and Social Impact Gold Award). The award-winning technology (i.e. Smart Mobile Farms), enable supermarkets, restaurants, hotels, office, schools, and neighbourhood to grow what they want and harvest what they need onsite. Farmacy helps to reduce 30% food waste and achieve 1.86 tons carbon emission on every sqm of farm, while securing 100% freshness and nutrition intake from the vegetables.

Exploring Global Logistics with Industry Leaders at HKU Business School Alumni Luncheon

The HKU Business School recently hosted an engaging alumni luncheon themed “Connecting Hong Kong: Bridging Global Logistics,” featuring two distinguished speakers: Mr. Andy Tung (Managing Partner of QBN Capital, Former CEO of Orient Overseas Container Lines), Prof. Philip Chen (Professor of Practice in Management and Strategy of HKU Business School, Independent Non-Executive Director of Hang Lung Properties, Former Chief Executive of Cathay Pacific Airways Ltd). The session was moderated by Dean Prof. Hongbin Cai. This event was particularly significant as it coincided with the 25th anniversary of the esteemed IMBA program. We were thrilled to welcome IMBA alumni to join us for this momentous occasion.

Dean Prof. Hongbin Cai opened the event by emphasizing the importance of fostering a strong alumni network. Mr. Tung then took the stage to share his insights on the global shipping industry, discussing his journey in his family business and the strategies they employed to adapt to the ever-evolving landscape. Prof. Chen discussed the aviation industry, highlighting the crucial role of Hong Kong International Airport as a major aviation hub. He addressed the challenges faced by airlines amidst the global pandemic and also noted that air cargo and express services would become more important, with many enhanced facilities at the airport.

The event concluded with a networking session, fostering a sense of pride and belonging among the HKU Business School community. We extend our heartfelt gratitude to the speakers and alumni for making this event a resounding success.

Alumni Sharing Session: Navigating the Private Credit Landscape – Strategies, Growth and Opportunities

HKU Business School Alumni Association (HKUBSAA) hosted an insightful session on “Demystifying Private Credit: The Cousin of Private Equity” on 12 September! Thanks to everyone who joined this alumni talk!

Our esteemed speaker and HKU Business School alumni, Sandy Yeung, shared her expertise and led a thought-provoking interactive session on various credit strategies and the evolving landscape of Private Credit. The talk was co-hosted by Joerg Riebel, our MBA alumnus.

Sandy explained how private credit grew significantly in recent years, especially after the Great Financial Crisis, as well as the differences between direct lending, special situations and venture debt, and how each strategy generates return. She also addressed pricings and other characteristics of senior secured debt versus mezzanine instruments.
