Assistant Prof. Chunghan Kang: Exploring the Intersection of AI, Mobile Technology, and Business
HKU Business School is home to a distinguished faculty dedicated to advancing knowledge and innovation. Among them is Assistant Prof. Chunghan Kang, whose expertise lies in combining economic theory with cutting-edge technology, providing valuable insights into business strategy, artificial intelligence (AI), and mobile technology.
Born and raised in Seoul, South Korea, Prof. Kang earned his Undergraduate and Master’s degrees in Economics from Seoul National University before completing a Doctorate in Information Technology Management at the Georgia Institute of Technology. His interdisciplinary background lets him explore the complex connections between business strategy, artificial intelligence (AI), and mobile technology through the lens of game theory.
His research focuses on the implications of mobile environments in economic systems, with an emphasis on consumer data and its influence on business strategies. He examines how privacy concerns affect the mobile app market and explores AI’s role in shaping competition. A key area of his work delves into whether AI adoption widens the technological gap between companies or serves as a balancing force that fosters innovation across industries. His findings aim to guide business leaders and policymakers as they navigate AI’s growing presence in global markets.
Assistant Prof. Kang is the recipient of the 2023 Sandra and Ronald Slaughter Ph.D. Fellowship, and was awarded at the Doctoral Consortium, International Conference on Information Systems (ICIS), in 2022.
Beyond academic research, Prof. Kang has a deep passion for sports, particularly tennis and long-distance running. As a former city champion in the Atlanta Lawn Tennis Association tournament, he continues to enjoy tennis in Hong Kong, along with scenic runs on Hong Kong Island from Kennedy Town to Central. He sees parallels between sports and academic research, emphasising the importance of perseverance, discipline, and resilience—qualities that are as vital in competitive athletics as they are in scientific inquiry.
As an educator, Prof. Kang is committed to helping students develop critical thinking skills and apply theoretical knowledge to real-world scenarios. His teaching philosophy encourages active engagement, equipping students with the analytical tools necessary to tackle complex subjects such as machine learning and consumer data analysis. Through interactive demonstrations, he ensures students understand both foundational principles and their practical implications.
He offers words of encouragement to students facing academic challenges, reminding them to embrace obstacles as opportunities for growth.
“The freedom to fail is one of the greatest privileges of being a student,” he reflects. “Cherish this time—it won’t last forever.” His perspective underscores the value of resilience, reinforcing that setbacks are an essential part of learning and progress.
With his expertise in economic strategy, AI, and mobile technology, Prof. Kang continues to push the boundaries of business research, fostering innovation and preparing students for success in an ever-evolving digital landscape. His dedication to academia, research, and mentorship ensures that HKU Business School remains a leader in shaping the next generation of business professionals.
