As the General Manager of E-house (China), David Hong (BBA(IS) 2009) has been devoting himself in China\u2019s property sector. Working closely with top management of Chinese developers, property analysts and media journalists, David shared his insights: \u201cThe ongoing COVID-19 pandemic has brought about inevitable challenges to the property market. As the economy is suffering stronger downward pressure and people are expecting an income drop, the market is getting more complex. However, the Chinese mainland market is one of the most resilient in the region. Property sales of China’s largest developers have rebounded since March. Opportunities are starting to emerge\u201d.

As the coronavirus pandemic escalates and disruptions to business-as-usual continue, everyone is grappling with the unknown. Roy Lo (BBA 1993), President of\u00a0<\/span>HKU BBA Alumni Association<\/a>\u00a0<\/span>and a seasoned finance professional with over 25 years\u2019 experience in auditing and accounting, encourages students and young alumni to stay calm and optimistic.<\/p>

\u201cEducation is not a safety net. It is the rocket which will propel you towards success. All you have to do is have an aim, equip yourself and work on everything that takes to get a lift-off. If you always put limits on everything you do, it will be an obstacle in your pathway towards success. There are no limits to what you can accomplish. You must embrace the challenges and go beyond the limits. It takes dedication, determination and perseverance for you to achieve your ultimate goal. In times of crisis, strong leadership is always the priority. Instead of worrying about sales decline during Covid-19, concentrating on building team spirit is a must.<\/p>

\u00a0<\/p>

\u201cYou need to understand peoples\u2019 concerns, and to enhance trust and collaboration,\u201d says Bastian. Forward thinking managers need to acknowledge the extra challenges by making the most of the extra time available. \u201cWhile the current crisis led to a slow-down in many areas, the additional leeway can also be used to implement projects which for which there was not sufficient time before,\u201d he says. You have to overcome by first identifying the roadblock, then assess the situation, and look at your options to bypass it. \u201cIf you are not happy with\u00a0what you do, you won\u2019t make your customers, your colleagues and your family happy either.\u201d Dr. Kate Kwan (MFin 2003), Executive Director of Banco Santander shares with us in her signature smile. Being a successful female senior executive, she takes pride in her work and she shares the fruits of her accomplishments with people around her: \u201cI love to sing, as it lifts my spirit and gives me more energy to cope with work. It also brings joy to others.\u201d<\/p>

Despite her busy schedule, Kate is dedicated to serving the community. As the Chairman of GF Federation, she and her volunteers distributed over 3,300 surgical masks to community members in need amid the Covid-19 outbreak. Since the start of the COVID-19 outbreak, Ricky Cheung (BBA(IBGM) 2010, Corporate Director for Talent & Culture, Rosewood Hotel Group) and his colleagues from around the world have been leading efforts in giving back to the communities, providing food and face masks to charities, and opening the hotels to host frontline healthcare professionals.<\/p>

Leveraging his expertise as a Talent Acquisition Director, he has committed to spending some time every week with hospitality professionals impacted to discuss ideas around writing CV, finding Jobs and interview preparation. Having about two decades of leadership experience across both statutory and multinational organisations, he shared his thought about the recent crisis of COVID-19.<\/p>

\u201cThe current challenge reminds me of the saying \u2013 \u2018it\u2019s not the strongest of the species, nor the most intelligent who can survive, but the one most responsive to change!\u2019 If we are willing and have the capacity to change our normal assumptions and habits, we can thrive under the new normal.\u201d He said, \u201cBusinesses need to be prepared for different scenarios under the new normal during and after the crisis. Nicknamed “Hong Kong\u2019s Number One PR\u201d, Francis Cheng (MBA, 2008) is easily one of the city\u2019s most recognisable faces in public relations. With solid PR & Marketing experience numbered among Star TV, Lan Kwai Fong Group and Occasions, Francis not only maintains a strong bond with most of the socialites and artists in town, he also stays close with all the chief editors from newspapers to magazines. In 2013, Francis launched his own venture NumberOne PR. Looking back on his 25-year PR journey, he faced numerous challenges yet managed to overcome them using innovative approaches and efficient communication.\u00a0 \u201cWhen written in Chinese, the word \u2018crisis\u2019 is composed of two characters. One represents \u2018danger\u2019 and the other represents \u2018opportunity\u2019.\u201d, Francis shared.<\/span>
