Family Background, Official Advancement, and Social Mobility of the Jiangsu Literati in the Qing Dynasty<\/strong><\/p>\n

The imperial examination system, which spanned over 1,300 years, exerted a profound influence on all aspects of traditional China, particularly regarding social mobility. Qin Jiang from Shanghai Jiao Tong University constructs a database of 6,486 licentiates (shengyuan) from Tongzhou and Haimen counties during the Qing Dynasty, based on the tradition of quantitative research into the social origins of examination candidates. He reveals that social mobility at the shengyuan level was higher than at the juren and jinshi levels. However, the competitive advantage of gentry families manifested in the probabilities and timing of advancement across all levels, effectively narrowing the promotion ladder.
\nIn official careers, since entry into the bureaucracy required obtaining mid-to-high-level examination degrees, candidates from commoner families who crossed the examination threshold did not exhibit significantly lower entry rates compared to those from gentry or scholar-commoner (shengjian) families. Nonetheless, juren from gentry backgrounds were more likely to secure mid-to-high-ranking positions, including crucial posts like county magistrates, whereas those from commoner or shengyuan families tended to be appointed to roles such as county instructors (jiaoyu) or assistant instructors (xundao).
\nIn this Quantitative History Webinar, Qin Jiang offers, for the first time, a comprehensive depiction of the examination and bureaucratic trajectories of Qing literati based on the complete cohort of students from two county schools. Qin Jiang will also demonstrate that while the examination system indeed provided avenues for social mobility, the influence of family background was more evident in elevating descendants to higher examination degrees. Such influence offered less direct advantage in bureaucratic appointments, though it continued to operate subtly. Finally, the webinar will also briefly compare the similarities and differences reflected in the shengyuan registries of Wuxi and Changshu with those of Nantong.<\/p>\n

\u79d1\u8209\u5236\u7dbf\u5ef61300\u9918\u5e74\uff0c\u5c0d\u50b3\u7d71\u4e2d\u570b\u7684\u65b9\u65b9\u9762\u9762\u7522\u751f\u4e86\u91cd\u5927\u5f71\u97ff\uff0c\u5176\u4e2d\u79d1\u8209\u8207\u793e\u6703\u6d41\u52d5\u7684\u95dc\u4fc2\u5c24\u70ba\u60f9\u4eba\u6ce8\u76ee\u3002 \u4e0a\u6d77\u4ea4\u901a\u5927\u5b78\u6b77\u53f2\u7cfb\u6559\u6388\u8523\u52e4\u5229\u7528\u91cf\u5316\u65b9\u6cd5\u7814\u7a76\u79d1\u8209\u4eba\u7269\u5c65\u6b77\u7684\u50b3\u7d71\uff0c\u6839\u64da\u300a\u901a\u975c\u4e8c\u5ea0\u984c\u540d\u9304\u300b\u5efa\u7acb\u4e86\u6e05\u4ee3\u5357\u901a\u548c\u6d77\u9580\u5169\u7e23\uff08\u5b78\uff096486\u540d\u751f\u54e1\u8cc7\u6599\u5eab\u3002 \u7814\u7a76\u767c\u73fe\uff0c\u5728\u79d1\u5834\u4e0a\uff0c\u751f\u54e1\u5c64\u6b21\u7684\u793e\u6703\u6d41\u52d5\u6027\uff08\u968e\u68af\u5bec\u5ea6\uff09\u8981\u9ad8\u65bc\u8209\u4eba\u548c\u9032\u58eb\u5c64\u6b21\uff0c\u4f46\u58eb\u7d33\u5bb6\u5ead\u7684\u7af6\u722d\u512a\u52e2\u9ad4\u73fe\u5728\u5404\u500b\u5c64\u7d1a\u7684\u6982\u7387\u548c\u901a\u904e\u6642\u6a5f\u4e0a\uff0c\u6649\u965e\u968e\u68af\u5be6\u969b\u4e0a\u5728\u9010\u968e\u5730\u6536\u7a84\u3002 \u5728\u5b98\u5834\u4e0a\uff0c\u7531\u65bc\u5165\u4ed5\u4ee5\u7372\u53d6\u4e2d\u9ad8\u7d1a\u79d1\u540d\u70ba\u524d\u63d0\uff0c\u90a3\u4e9b\u8de8\u904e\u79d1\u8209\u9580\u6abb\u7684\u5e73\u6c11\u5bb6\u5ead\u58eb\u5b50\u5011\uff0c\u5728\u5165\u4ed5\u7387\u65b9\u9762\u4e26\u4e0d\u986f\u8457\u4f4e\u65bc\u751f\u54e1\u3001\u76e3\u751f\u548c\u58eb\u7d33\u5bb6\u5ead\u51fa\u8eab\u8005; \u4e0d\u904e\u58eb\u7d33\u5bb6\u5ead\u51fa\u8eab\u7684\u8209\u4eba\u66f4\u6613\u7372\u5f97\u4e2d\u9ad8\u7d1a\u5b98\u8077\uff0c\u4e14\u5c31\u4efb\u65bc\u5dde\u7e23\u5b98\u7b49\u91cd\u8981\u8077\u4f4d\uff0c\u800c\u5e73\u6c11\u548c\u751f\u76e3\u5bb6\u5ead\u51fa\u8eab\u7684\u8209\u4eba\u5247\u66f4\u6613\u5c31\u8077\u65bc\u5dde\u7e23\u6559\u8aed\u3001\u8a13\u5c0e\u7b49\u5b78\u5b98\u3002<\/p>\n
