Using newly digitized data on trademark registrations for 20,740 trademarks between 1928 and 1935, they analyze firms’ advertisement strategies through their trademark images. During this Quantitative History Webinar, Cong Liu will explain their difference-in-differences analysis, which indicates that, compared with firms from other nations, Japanese firms were more likely to register trademarks with Chinese-style images after the Mukden Incident. This effect was particularly concentrated in Shanghai and within the processed goods sector.

Cong Liu’s co-authors: Shiyu Bo (Jinan) and Ting Chen (HKBU)

Discussant: Chang Sun, Assistant Professor of Economics, HKU Business School

Live on Zoom on Thursday, April 25, 2024
16:00 Hong Kong/Beijing/Singapore
09:00 London | 17:00 Tokyo | 18:00 Sydney | Click here to view your local time

About the Quantitative History Webinar Series

The Quantitative History (QH) Webinar Series aims to provide researchers, teachers, and students with an online intellectual platform to keep up to date with the latest research in the field, promoting the dissemination of research findings and interdisciplinary use of quantitative methods in historical research.
